Many wooden mines and glassmines remained in the ground. These glassmines are also pretty durable.ĭe-mining squads, mostly German POWs, cleared vital parts of that area, around 100 people, mostly de-miners and a few locals - afaik, had been killed after the war, until around 1952. The Germans used plenty of mines that were made of wood or even glass ("Glassmine 43"), making it virtually impossible to detect them, where the latter can't even be detected by dogs, for some reason. I'd like to point out that some areas are still mined. If you have a guide who knows the area, there are some remarkable things to see. I live in Cologne, so you can drop me a PM if u need some more tips. Getting a car would be the best option, but the museum would be well worth the trip. The trip might take around four hours by car and way longer if you go by train (4 hrs from Cologne to Hannover), since you gotta take a regional train from Hannover to Munster. There are quite some road constructions on the highways to Hannover (on A1 and a few on A2, too), so 3:30 hrs would be pretty optimistic as you'd have to speed like a mofo. They have all German WW2 tanks (40 vehicles) - except for the Tiger I -, the first German WWI tank A7V, and other interesting items, including American, Russian, British and Israeli tanks, plus hundreds of small arms and military items, including Rommel's uniform and death mask (*shudder* ). Imho, the Panzermuseum M unster would be the best choice. There's a German post-war tank (Leopard I, IIRC) which had been cut into 2 pieces, probably the most interesting item, but the rest is a bit disappointing. It's subordinated to a department of the German Army, so it contains quite some interesting items and accurate infos, but the collection contains many modern items, and not even a KingTiger tank. I wouldn't recommend the Wehrtechnische Sammlung (military technology collection). If you like to see tanks and other heavy equipment you should go to the "Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung" in Koblenz, which is within car / train range.
